What is a moleplough?

In telecommunications, a subduct mole plough is a trenchless installation method designed to efficiently bury protective subducts that will later house fibre-optic or communications cables. The equipment uses a robust plough blade, typically attached to a tracked vehicle or tractor, to slice through the ground at a specified depth while simultaneously feeding the subduct into the created channel. This single-pass technique significantly reduces surface disturbance, eliminating the need for traditional excavation, spoil handling and extensive reinstatement. Subduct mole ploughing is particularly suited to rural or semi-rural environments such as grassed verges and open ground, where long duct routes are required. To ensure safe and compliant delivery, the process must incorporate detailed planning of alignment and depth, utility surveys to avoid existing buried services, and appropriate reinstatement measures to maintain land conditions and protect the infrastructure.
